Ian opened the meeting by acting the “school teacher “ chastising Pauline for disruptive behaviour, the irony of the situation is Pauline of course is a retired teacher and no doubt his actions will be committed to her memory and will come back to bite him!

We had an email from Kevin Curd, coordinator Joint Rotary Clubs RYDA, thanking all Rotarians for donating 80 volunteer days towards RYDA, in particular Alf, Neil, Ann, Noel, Col, Lauren, Pam, Deborah, Stuart, Mark, Helen, Pauline, John, Bernie, Genta, Darryl and Alan. They tutored 507 students from 6 schools!

Deborah Taylor, our president announced she was going to be in the ranks of the “unemployed” as of Friday and therefore will have more time to dedicate to Rotary. She and Pauline are attending a seniors conference (in the interest of my longevity I am not repaired to make any comment!) Apparently the Council has funds available for community groups which can be applied for online, Pauline and Deborah are going to attempt to grab a “fistful of dollars” for the club, good hunting ladies!

Cards thanking us for their recognition were received from Lyn Ghan and Bernie Strong after being presented with PHF’s at the Changeover for their voluntary help and support.

A think tank is to be held at the Strong residence, we need to invent more ways of making money (Ron can be of help being a retired Police Inspector giving guidance as to the legality of some of the schemes!) date to be advised.

Genta introduced our guest speaker, Jason Crosgrove who, in spite of his many qualifications, has settled on a career in IT and Security. Jason showed us some absolutely amazing recording (video and sound) equipment. “Inspector Gadget” is alive and lives on the Sunshine Coast! His watch as an example was a telephone which can record sight and sound as well as show the time and had an inbuilt GPS, absolutely amazing! Apparently criminals are steering away from property with sophisticated surveillance equipment and searching  easy targets, jewellery is still the No.1 for ease of disposal ’though.

Jason was extremely helpful with any questions which were put and many of us came away with a greater understanding of what is available on the market in the “covert security” field.

Jason was thanked with the obligatory wine glasses presented by Ian.


Directors reports:

Lyn Roberts handed out three bursaries in front of a gathering of 200  to single mums at STEMS on behalf of Rotary at their Christmas in July which were most appreciated.

Darryl is taking a bus on the 22nd November to view and luncheon on “The Sea Princess” at a cost of $20 per person leaving at 8 am from Caloundra transit centre, contact Darryl.

Ron made mention that the SCU were considering naming the “Ride to Work” in honour of our past President Jim Adams, also the new trailer is to be known as simply “Jim”. (No doubt it will have different coloured wheels).

There was no International toast as both Alan and Noel were organising RYDA.
Visiting Rotarians: Ken McMeeken from Morwell, Vic.
Makeups: All those who attended the BBQ’s and RYDA Presidents report. Deborah put forward the idea of a brainstorm to investigate new and interesting money making ventures and projects (obviously the money making projects come before the projects) Ian introduced our guest
 
Speaker, Angie Anderson who hails from Noosa and her subject was “cooking for cures”. Angie is an Internationally awarded author who has published seven books and is working on the eighth. Certainly she has come a long way for a child who grew up in Orbost Victoria, a small timber town, not that Far East of lakes Entrance.

Angie has worked extensively with aloe vera and one would have to conclude that she is an authority on the subject and from what she explained it can be used to combat some malignancies.

There are many many varieties of aloe Vera but only two have medicinal qualities, chincensis and the larger and more commercially grown variety barbadensis which matures in two years.

Gerry, our Sargent, then proceeded to ply his trade extracting as many gold coins as possible from those present he  even used a third party to this end, ingenious fellow indeed!

Visitors: Liberty Moore (assisting John Shadforth); Visiting Rotarian : Ken Mc Meeken from Morwell Apologies: Norm (who unfortunately is back in hospital in Brisbane); Noel, Alan (setting up RYDA), Gerry, ill with flu and Stuart.
Makeups: Mark, who attended the District Board Meeting and took control of the books as the new “District Treasurer”; Deborah attended District TRF grant seminar.

Alf went on to tell us of the article on page 9 of the Rotary Magazine which told of the “Glittering Ceremony” honouring Nevell’s 50 years in Rotary. Nevell, in his humble way, made light of the momentous occasion. Apparently Nevell and Linley will be joining us on the 30/7/13 so we will look forward to their company.

We received a “Thank You “ from Ruth Namboya from Uganda who was our guest earlier this year.

Guest Speaker:
Roger introduced our guest speaker, John Shadforth who is heavily involved in philanthropic work particularly in East Timor.

John was inspirational in that although born as he described as “negative worrier” has achieved so much in his life, he attributes this to the power of positive encouragement and study.

He is familiar with the wonderful work of Rotary within the community and abroad. He has lived on the Sunshine Coast for 40+ years. The Sunshine Coast University is one of his greatest passions with more and more graduates employed in our community while others who have matriculated have gone on to be leaders in many different fields. His “Encouragement Foundation” has offered two scholarships to the Uni, “Read to Remember” and a Rugby Scholarship. Interestingly the Rugby scholarship was won by a female!

Their work in East Timor has produced a building a year for the last five years, the latest and sixth project being a kindergarten to accommodate eighty children. One very important  policy of the foundation is gender and racial equality and there must be equal numbers of boys and girls enrolled. I have always believed that by educating the males you improve the outcome for his family but by educating the females you educate the offspring, this is far more beneficial to the whole community! (It also empowers women and lifts them above the disgusting and demeaning chattel status which is so prevalent). John also explained that his charity had taken Australian students to East Timor as helpers and also make them understand they have “Corporate Responsibility” to those less privileged and to believe in the power of positive energy.

In finishing he implored us to encourage and reward those who have achieved what may appear to us as modest goals explaining that  positive reinforcement lifts self-esteem thus avoiding depression.

As all Rotarians will attest, we already subscribe to the culture of encouragement through our “Pride Of Workmanship Awards”

Alf thanked our guest speaker and his very helpful assistant Liberty (who incidentally is a graduate of the Sunshine Coast Uni.)
 
Directors reports:
John Hanley reminded all of the BBQ at the Uni. today and asked if there were any who may be available tomorrow (two are needed) to take Gerry’s and another member’s place?

Margaret gave a briefing on the “Bus Shed” for the Lighthouse Centre; it would appear that the school is going to supply a finished (at their cost) concrete slab leaving us to supply and erect the shed.

Darryl Laing invited expressions of interest from us to lunch on the “Sea Princess” later on this year, those participating would be required to arrange for a bus to ferry themselves to the ship and after a conducted tour a free luncheon on board will be provided! I think his offer will be fully subscribed, who said there wasn't such a thing as a free lunch?

Visiting Rotarian: Ken, who has made his annual pilgrimage from Morwell, while Jan Conti (Darwin Sunrise) sent an apology via Gerry as it was too cold and she was tucked up in her warm bed!
Welcome back Margaret who has been “globe trotting “ this time to the “Big Apple” Makeups: All who attended the board meeting. Lauren claimed a make up for having a meeting with past member Alfred....cheeky!

Deborah welcomed Ken and went on to discuss matters raised at last nights board meeting expressing her desire to become more involved with ACTS Church which runs a food distribution centre at 11Helen St. Caloundra. Building the shed to house the bus for the Lighthouse Centre. Men's Shed Gateway project.

Directors Reports:
Lauren, after having met with Alfred, came away with a recipe to solve our funding woes. John Hanley informed us that on the 16th.and 17th. There is a BBQ at the Sunshine Coast Uni and RYDA is being held also!

Mark Ward then took the lectern and attempted to teach those assembled the finer points of “Blogging”. Mark, we are struggling with the BASICS! However I do applaud your enthusiasm and confidence in our ability, key word here is persistence!

Roger reported that the Tranquility Garden is completed and he wishes to hold a breakfast to honour all the businesses that donated materials which made the project possible.

Deborah has a desire to increase our fellowship with more social outings this year, I wholeheartedly agree!

There was considerable discussion regarding the cost of being a “Rotarian” and how the financial burden can be reduced so that more members can be attracted or retained. As it was pointed out some time ago, why does it cost volunteers for the privilege to help the community? There are some clubs in our district who have chosen to meet for a meal three out of four weeks a month, the fourth being a “coffee and pastry” informal get together but still covering “things Rotary”, I  think there will be more discussion on this subject as there are a lot of unresolved issues, eg visiting Rotarians and whether our present venue will continue to support us to name a few. Darryl commented that it was difficult to purchase a cooked breakfast for less than $20 and we were privileged to have a meeting in isolation (read we’re doing well where we are in his opinion). Deborah made mention that the Salvation Army had all the facilities necessary to accommodate us for our meetings, Stuart agreed pointing out that they have a commercial kitchen on the premises also, obviously more research into this venue is justified. Helen added that it wasn't a condition under our charter that we meet weekly and fortnightly was acceptable, this she pointed out would break the “treadmill” of procuring guest speakers.

Alan Bethune reminded us all that our $240.00 membership is now due.

John Hanley has the directorship of “community” which encompasses our golf day, Alan's garden, the lighthouse centre, the garage for the expected bus, etc.

Stuart updated us on the shed to be installed at the Salvation Army's Sugarbag Road headquarters which with some alteration would accommodate our BBQ trailer admirably, this news excited certain members who have through their generosity have stored the trailer at their homes.

Alan suggested we reawaken “bookfest” which we all had agreed to put to bed, the reason being that any leftover books (and a lot of books we discarded) were in demand in the Solomon's and PNG. I could almost hear the muscles in the room crying out in pain!

Ian has the Directorship of Membership, and is targeting:
1. Retention of members, fellowship and social activities.
2. Recruiting new members, please invite someone to attend our meeting.

Alf informed us that John Shadforth is scheduled to be our guest speaker in a fortnight, he is a retired civil contractor who has set up a philanthropic organisation. From what we are led to believe is a very motivated speaker! Also Angie Anderson is going to speak on “cooking For Cures” which is self explanatory.

Next week we are going to school, we are being tutored in the noble art of “blogging” I think Mark is going to attempt to drag us into the 21st century!

Genta is International Director and as such will try to coordinate the joining of funds with the Japanese club to attract more funding for projects in Gizo. He also mentioned that a young Japanese man (Fumi's son) is looking for accommodation, centrally positioned near public transport co that he can attend English Classes. There Is a remuneration package offered, if interested please contact Genta. No 3 Happy Conference is planned for 17/10/13 at the CCA hall, although the principal guest speaker has been booked support speakers are required, again if you can assist, contact Genta.

Rotary International has decided to start promoting “Rotary”, it's probably way overdue in my opinion as the youth of the world need to be reminded that collaboration mends all manner of problems, brakes cultural and religious barriers and deters selfishness.

Merv has the most interesting role of “Water and Sanitation” district officer; he told us that old habits /customs are hard to change and that there will be three Rotary groups going to Gizo this year. We are going to donate $3000 towards projects in the Solomon Islands this year.
