Guest Speaker:
James introduced Margaret who spoke on her recent travels to Burma (Myanmar), Antarctica and Peru.
Margaret guided two tours to Burma last year (Sep+Dec). Burma is an emerging country, very poor but hotels are of a good standard. There are many gold temples and pagodas, mostly all of them are gold plated and some encrusted with precious gems. After Rangoon Margaret flew to Pindaya which is famous for its caves of statues (many with Buddha’s) then onto Inle Lake which they toured in long boats. There are many stilt houses and the lake is famous for the rowers who paddle with their feet and fish at the same time. Also visited a market where hundreds of long boats had converged. Next activity of note was a hot air balloon ride over Bagan where thousands of temples, pagodas, and stupas unfolded.
Peru was visited in Jan13. Saw many cathedrals, the colourful Uros people in traditional dress, Inca ruins and also did a walk at Machu Picchu.
Next journey was a 21 day cruise of Sth America and Antarctica which included a visit to a very windy Stanley in Falkland Islands. There were several nature experts on the ship and they passed many icebergs, the UK & USA stations and the beautiful Beagle channel (what a great name for a dog breed!). They did not see any other cruise ships for 3 days, although the map of their route looks like spaghetti. Final port was Ushuaia and the Tierra del Fuego National Park.
Director reports:
Helen spoke on a proposal for the SC cluster clubs to JV with Community FM for project & event exposure. Cost would be $200 pa for each club. Our Club to decide at next Board meeting
