Nevell McPhee's 50 years in Rotary

On Friday Night, Alfs' careful planning saw many of us bundled into a bus and transported into another dimension, or at least another District, to witness a rare and spectacular Rotary event

Nevell's Rotary career unfolded before our eyes, with tales of his remarkable deeds done with the true spirit of Rotary

 50 years in the Rotary family, and marred only by the evil deeds of some rogue breakfast Club at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast (who will remain unnamed) where Nevell was shamelessly tricked into turning up at a formal Rotary function in his Hawaiian gear, and the whole situation made worse by the sordid detail being leaked to the press.  Nevell was understandably still furious and left the audience in no doubt about the serious nature of this treachery.

 However, after some gentle persuasion,  all seemed to be forgiven

President’s report: see blog:    http://rotarycal.blogspot.com.au/ Guest Speaker: Julianna introduced Peter Fox who spoke on his 12 different careers which ranged from School teacher to Professional singer to News Reader for Ch7 in Canberra, to writing commercials for Consolidated Press to Shipping line Manager. Some of his achievements were transforming Flick from a Pest Control Company to Property Protection Company. His work with Crown Corning where manufacturing increased from 4 machines 8 hours a day to 8 machines 24 hours a day and their first export order of 1 million beer glasses to Germany. One of Peters more remarkable achievements at Crown C was the TV commercial for Vision saucepans which won a Golden Lion award in Cannes as well as other awards in Australia. With Dreamworld, he transformed it from a Kiddies Park to Major Theme Park with visitors going from 300,000 to 1 million plus. With Life Education Centres; students grew from 30,000 a year to over 1 million a year and was recognised as one of the best programs world-wide. If that was not enough, Peter’s latest project is with Vividas which is aiming to have the best HD internet video player. Director reports: Alan looking to fill his roster for SC BBQ on Thursday. Alan also advised that club received funds of $750 for the Caravan & Camping Show. AG Helen will be overseas from next week and is encouraging us to attend District Assembly on 26May, especially relevant for the new Board. Refer to Rogers report on our support for 104.9 FM. Julianna advised that MUNA had to be cancelled as only 3 schools showed interest, but will try again next year. RYDA is coming up with 4 sessions in July and 2 in October. NYSF applications close at end of May but interviewing one good candidate. Margaret is looking for nominations for Community Awards. Alf reminded us that next Tuesday’s meeting has been transferred to Friday night and that the bus will leave Stockland at 4pm from the Bus Stop in First Avenue Caloundra outside the west side of Stocklands Shopping Centre, please have correct change for Alf, cost is $36 per head. The following week we have Carol Smith talking about how life changing the NYSF was for daughter Kate. Good Afternoon Everyone, and thank you, Karen, for sending out the Registration Forms for the District Changeover Dinner to be held at Beerwah Community Hall on the 14th June, in only about 5 weeks time!!
First of all , I would like to thank Maleny Club for doing all the preliminary work on this, they have done a great job. Between them and Glasshouse Club, it will be run like clockwork on the night!!! 
We have tried to come up with a very interesting and fun night, with excellent food and entertainment, and short speeches, for a very reasonable price of only $40.00 per person!! 
We would like to see as many people from our District there, as possible, so please come along, and join us to enjoy the night, helping Dai to finish off his year, and to help get my year started with a bang!!!
Please make sure you have nominated for one or more of the 9 trophies which will be given out on the night, and I believe Dai will also be making a Presentation to the Clubs which qualified for a Presidential Citation. It should be a great night, please take advantage of the low cost, which we have done especially for you, come along, and really enjoy this District Changeover!!!!

SUNSHINE FM promotion
HF and LS have been working hard to get their cluster clubs to work more closely together. They have suggested that their clubs get together and jointly market Rotary and Rotary projects in partnership with Sunshine FM 104.9.  This idea had been discussed with Ken  O’ Flaherty the Station Manager, who indicated that SFM would support the initiative.
Clubs are generally supportive in principle and are waiting for feedback from LS and HF re SFM’s response, a broad outline of how it will work and confirmation of the costs involved.(proposed $200 per club per annum) This has been approved at Board

Tranquility Garden working bee maybe 22nd June /then Handover
We are progressing with the final stages of the Tranquility Garden at the Caloundra Hospital.  Tony Debrincat from RC Glass House Mountains has donated some waterlillies and expertise, Artist Jinty Stockings has been commissioned to do a tiled mural of the Glass House Mountains, paid for with a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council, and Bunnings has offered to donate hardware to fix the tiles and complete a shade structure

MUNA
With MUNA’s interest being limited to three schools, it was decided to cancel its day on the 25th May, 2013. Julianna is planning to visit and talk at an Independent schools networking evening in the near future. Planning to run in 2014.
RYDA
With 5 days of Driver Education for Year 11’s planned in the next 6 months, planning will begin shortly.
National Youth Science Forum 2014
Applications close 30 May 2013. I have send reminders to my list of contacts at a number of schools including Unity College. Julianna and one other will interview students whilst I’m away.

Garage for The Lighthouse Centre bus

Thanks Margaret for presenting this new project at Board last week.  Mens' Shed is helping the Lighthouse Centre, at Caloundra State High School.  They now have a bus to help their special needs children with off campus programs, but need a garage to house it at the school.

Our end is to pay for the kit and help Men's Shed build it.  The project should move fairly quickly, with everything pretty much ready to go.   It should be finished this Rotary year.  A few of us met at the school last Thursday.

8th May saw our breakfast meeting transferred to the University where good fun, food and fellowship mixed with the more serious business of awarding $4000 scholarships to three postgraduate students.
