Awardees were Norm, Julianna, Lyn, Stewart, Olive, John & Jan
Karen also gave a brief talk about the school .  There are 2250 students with approx half/half in the Primary and Secondary sections.  Students generally come from a 3km catchment but also from Bellvista.  Fergus discussed the catering School.  Thanks Karen & Fergus, and also to the students who cooked us breakfast.

 

We had a tour of the Commercial Kitchen, Sports Centre and Performing Arts Centre including the Apple Media Room - A very impressive campus with Karen doing a lot of micro management at the design stage.

We will be meeting next Tuesday 5th November at Meridan State College for a Vocational Visit.  We will have a hot brekky there with fruit juice etc

Helen introduced Frances Cahill.  Frances has a 30 year public service background with indigenous housing, and she sings.  She now specializes in personal development and is organizing the Create Connect Youth Arts Conference.

Frances’ first question was “Do you have a “mouse” in the family?”  If the answer is yes, then the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy may be the answer.  It’s all about confidence creation, social literacy, feeling comfortable when public speaking, articulate adults & kids, & punchy presentations.

The Club is invited to sponsor a student at the Create Connect Youth Arts Conference.
Cost is $295  It’s from Dec16th-20th Dec at Mountain Creek SHS - Four day conference and a fifth day performance, for 13-18 years olds.

President Deborah presented Amy with a cheque for $500 being from the Raw Sounds BBQ.  Not to be outdone,  Amy presented Deborah with a Certificate of Appreciation for the Club

Deb presented the bursary at Meridan and our logo seemed to get stuck in their projector for award after award - good trick if we can repeat it.

Energex & heritage grants coming up.

Christine gave a fascinating account of her time in the funeral industry, starting with a “calling” during her NZ Rotary Exchange as a 17 yo in Year 10, where she was introduced to a Funeral Director.  Attempts to start work in the industry met with “Females not welcome, too young & not part of the family”.

After a decade climbing the corporate McDonalds chain, she met a lady whose dad was a Funeral Director and knew an embalmer (although there was little need for embalming in Australia, and probably not in NZ either after they discover refrigeration) To cut a long story  short she eventually got work as an attendant, then a conductor.  17 years later she runs White Lady Funerals at Warana.

A couple of brushes with the criminal underworld enlivened her story.  One involved the funeral of Neddy Smith’s mum complete with a heavy police presence.

Lauren has distributed the pink trifecta tickets for us to sell, Noel’s away & Alan is doing the roster

Helen sent Pauline a 70th birthday card.  Pauline will “expect more respect” on her return.

Darryl spoke of grand daughter Lilly’s close shave - these Laings will stop at nothing to get in the paper.  Darryl will ring round for passport/licence numbers for our cruise ship visit.  More space is available.

Julianna introduced Lauren who spoke about her RYPEN experience at Coolum.  Lauren is 14 yo, attends Year 9 at Pacific Lutheran College and is an accomplished Irish Dancer.  She thought is was “the best camp ever” and learnt some important new skills including teamwork. Activities included rafting and the flying Fox.  Sonita thanked us for the sponsorship.  She attended as a student two years ago & has now returned as a leader.

Running on 10% Government funding, the organization provides support for Multiple Sclerosis sufferers.  This is the most common neurological condition.  It attacks the central nervous system by breaking down the myelin coating of nerve cells, so the messages don’t get through, so symptoms show up in multiple areas & diagnosis is not easy.  There are 23,000 sufferers in Australia.  Average age of diagnosis is 30 & it effects more women than men.  Causes are thought to be related to genetic causes, vitamen D deficiency and a viral trigger.

MS Queensland has 120 staff in seven zones.  Tas is particularly trying to get local physiotherapy treatment as this provides huge benefits.

Merv & Genta met with Trevor & others about proposed works in Gizo to be done with a Global Grant by Komaki Club.  The solar panels proposed for the hospital will save $40k/year.  Expect a team to go in April next year, with further grant applications planned too,

Neil Costello spoke about their recent Chinchilla to Port Augusta with 53 other vehicles (the rumour that they were all in covered wagons is not true) talk about “I’ve been everywhere man”  Chinchilla, Injune, Carnarvon, Springsure, Mt Enviskillen Cattle Station, Isifird, Ilfracombe, Boulia, Mungeranie, Farian Ruins, Painted Desert, Cooper Pedy, Woomera, Port Augusta to name a few (and you can fine me if any spelling is wrong)

You camp along the waters of the Yabba Creek under large shade trees.  apparently the fishing is very good.  There is a basic kiosk in the camp with ice, bait and gas.  Boat & kayak hire available, a Laundromat a v basic children's playground and a great undercover area for a nightly get-together.  Also, Margaret and I managed to buy a couple of clothing items at the local dress shop - enough incense to knock you out.  Interesting.

Reel 17/9/13

As our Tranquility garden Handover had to be postponed due to the dreaded Noro virus, we all met at at Oaks and enjoyed fellowship and a general update on our activities.

There were no guests or visiting Rotarians.

International toast to Rotary Club of San Fransisco,
apparently  a very gay club of 176 members meeting at the Back Door Cafe.

Deborah spoke about the Casablanca at Caloundra function in mid December that we are going to run with Cal Pac - should be lots of scope to work to that theme - Rick's Cafe etc, all in a hangar at Caloundra Aerodrome.

The list went round for volunteers at the Fringe Festival BBQ at Kings Beach on Friday 27th Sept, set up at 8:30am, then 9:00-1:00 and 1:00-5:00 shifts.

Our trailer now resides in the Salvation Army shed thanks to Stuart. Alan put out a call for shelving.

Julie rang from Caloundra State High School - site for the garage has been selected, the Education Dept will do the slab, and Gateway will organize the construction. Watch this space.

Pauline put out an invitation to her birthday party on 19th Oct.
Bad news is that it's in Melbourne - wlll, you never know.

Shock announcement by Noel that he has turned "nice"
- but turns out he is just looking for victims, sorry volunteers, to sell Melbourne Cup Sweep tickets.
I'm sure he will go back to his old ways once the we are all booked in.

Genta gave a run down on the Gizo project.  We cannot team with Gizo for a grant as we are the same district - Maybe Komaki to the rescue.

Planning has started for a visit to Japan in Cherry blossum season next March/April.

Sgt Gerry gave us a lot of fines as usual.
