18th February Meeting - Carol Humphries

Chair
Darryl
Never one to be shy, Darryl got in a quick plug for The Travel Agent even before the toast for Australia - talk about shameless!

International Toast

from Norm
RC Truro in Cornwall
who have just experienced their worst floods ever.
They proudly promote themselves as a “dual gender” club
(five of their 35 members are women)

Still a bit of a way to go before they compete with Facebook
(In a nod to the "it's complicated" sexual identities of many of its users, the social network on Thursday added a third "custom" gender option for people's profiles. In addition to Male or Female, Facebook now lets U.S. users choose among some 50 additional options such as "transgender," "cisgender," "gender fluid," "intersex" and "neither.")

For Rotarians into the fine detail, their 18th Feb meeting (6pm for 6:30) featured guest speaker John Coates and the menu was roast topside of beef, Yorkshire pudding with gravy, or mushroom and goat’s cheese risotto

Visitors

Soon to be Rotarians Anna & Bernie
Sue, and of course Carol

Apologies

Noel, Gerry & Ann

Makeups
Mark at District Board
Deborah & Helen had a Cluster meeting

Presidents Report

We all sang Happy Birthday for Alf

Clean Up Australia 2nd March?
Study of creeks?
Where is this going?

28th-30th March Conference
International Convention in Sydney
Trivia Night 6th March at Unity.

Deb & Carol attended a Quota International 95th anniversary
Deb attended the Meridan Leaders Investiture

Golf day progressing well - more teams needed

Inductions

Congratulations to Bernie and Anna who were inducted into the Club.

Ian said he had written everything out so I would not need to take notes
I hope he didn’t expect me to type them - my secretarial skills are somewhat limited

Speaker
Pauline introduced Carol, a friend of Deborah’s with a wide world of experience including a Blood Bank, producing Standards for paints & varnish, book depositary, running a pub and as a political agent.  She arrived from the UK in 1978 but remarried and returned in 88 for 12 years (Australia may have been a shock initially)

Nice building, but the queue at customer service looks a bit slow

Carol spoke about her eight year experience as a Councillor in Wandsworth, south of the Thames in inner London, and famous for the Battersea Power Station, its art deco Council Chambers, and setting for some of The Bill

Year - but looks more like smog than cloud - gotta love the English

There were 61 councillors with four year terms looking after a population of 280,000 with 20% being from ethnic backgrounds.  The Mayor is a “figurehead” and is voted in by the majority party.  Seems the Leader and seven Cabinet Members do most of the grunt work.

Their mantra was “good service at a reasonable cost”

They were obviously impressed with Carol and after four years she was made the Cabinet Member for housing, with a $500m Council budget plus more from the central government.

It’s a lot more than numbers and dollars.  Traditionally public housing was needed for labourers, but now the unemployed and previously homeless are the main users, with many and varied detail issues to be resolved.  One case was a 60yo deaf man and his barking dog driving his neighbours insane - when they took away his dog, the man started howling.

Homeless people are at the top of the list for housing, and once allocated, the units are theirs for life.

Much is older stock, with repairs and upgrades to security, intercoms, doors, CCTV, lighting etc the order of the day.  Although economic rationalism would suggest demolition of older stock, upgrading was preferred to maintain social harmony.  Alternative solutions were limited due to lack of land.  Carol described the upgrading of a 18 storey block with 5 units per floor with new cladding, windows, doors, kitchens & bathrooms

After the social disaster of Britain’s post war housing, much has been learnt about maintaining social cohesion.  The residents are deeply involved in decision making - it may be hard to manage but it’s good for residents as they have some control over their environment.  Numbers and dollars are important, but flexibility and residents’ input is paramount.  Some units are sold into private ownership, which allows entry into the housing market and creates pride of place.  They run a tight ship with rent nonpayments severely dealt with, and antisocial people “named and shamed”

Carol spoke about renovations and social upheaval, sheltered housing for the elderly, and hostels for battered women, graffiti and illegal immigrants.

Carol and the Queen Mother at a function - Carol is the one standing up straight
 - everything else, including the building, is on a lean

Questions included about rent affordability, pets (encouraged), public or private (don’t care) and “would she run for Mayor here?” a couple of times

Hey! on closer inspection that's not a regular Rotary badge Darryl -
Aaaaah - more product placement *#@*##

A few items from John

Firstly : Pauline’s details re radio interview Roger & Anna next Thursday 20th Feb at 9.05 AM   This can be heard not on the radio but on www.valleyfm.net.au ( streaming globally)

Secondly : we have a wine tasting at our place 21 Albert St Shelly Beach TONIGHT at 6.30 PM.   Realize notice is short but was only arranged last night. I filled in a survey several months ago & the reward is a free wine tasting of imported wines which the poor rep has been trying to arrange for several months.  I forgot to mention it this morning but told a few members at coffee after our meeting.
So anyone who would like to front up tonight at 6.30 PM would be very welcome.  There is no cost but I expect he will try to flog his product but there is no obligation to purchase

Thirdly :  BBQ’s at the Uni. On Monday Tuesday & Wednesday next week.
As mentioned this morning we have to pay for parking on Monday ( Tues & Wed are free ) But Uni will re-imburse us so the club will re-imburse you. Some car pooling has been arranged.
We are located in same position as last year – on the lawn out the front of the co-op bookshop so parking adjacent to library would be best.

We need to be ready to serve food at !2 noon sharp (.Students only have an hour to eat.) so we need to be fully set up & cooking to handle the rush by 11 – 11.15 AM

We are feeding     Monday    1200       70% international sausages / 30% vegieburgers approx. each day
      Tues         1200
       Wed         1000

11th February Meeting - Kiera Kelly Williamson - Caloundra Weekly

Chair

Welcome back Helen from Tasmania,

Makeups

Presidents Report
Deborah welcomed the visitors and the Rotarians who we haven’t seen for a while

Big news is RC Caloundra’s 60th anniversary in October
we await further developments

We agreed to test out a new breakfast format, with the hot meal at 6:45

Golf Day Golf Day Golf Day 15 teams required

Speaker
Helen introduced Kiera Kelly Williamson,
Kelly is from her dad’s side and Williamson her mum’s
She is editor of the Caloundra Weekly and also works for the Sunshine Coast Daily, with 21,000 readership
She is from Mackay until 6 years old then moved to the Coast wither her mother until her dad, who worked in the mines, could join them.  Now in Alexander Headland
She was at the Mooloolah Primary School and received a Mountain Creek State High scholarship.
She always had a love for art & writing, so she did a three year journalism course at USC.
Started work at Channel 7, which she didn’t like, so worked for the Daily for free for six months until starting in the property management area.  Later worked for the Buderim Chronical.

Keira is now 22yo, and loves journalism and her job at the Weekly.
She gets to search out the stories, and there are a couple of hundred community groups to “keep happy”.

Kiera did dance but suffered a broken back
No guesses about the chances of a dance article on the Weekly as dancers were ## themselves.  Gerry quickly made clear his dancing days were over.

During questions Helen asked about movie reviews in the Daily, and

Iain got to vent his rage about fishing stories, where anyone in their tinny stuffing up when out to sea is immediately labelled as a fisherman, bringing disrepute to the industry, and not to plumbing, or accountancy, or wherever these idiots actually work in real life.  Good point I think.  Apparently the sub-editors are the bad guys.

Julianna asked about submitting articles -
Kiera does about 40 stories a week by herself, so submission by groups is useful.  Do an intro, and summary, then some key points, and include a photo.

Gerry asked about deadlines -
Delivery is every Thursday, and the deadline is the Thursday before, but Wednesday better, or two weeks before if your submission is especially dull.

Deb then started some debate about printing defamatory letters, and how to avoid getting sued, and why the letters are all written by the same people.  We understand not many of Deb’s letters get published.  Anna said her local Somerset Paper was a bit controversial in this regard (hope they’re not reading this)

Norm asked if the gory death, gloom and controversial stories, especially about Peter Slipper, increased sales.  A=yes

Darryl asked about circulation - The Weekly is growing, but the Daily shares readership with online readers.

Julianna asked in which direction she should send her pharmaceutical propaganda.  Apparently her new shop is on the border at Wurtulla and she shares Kawana’s and Caloundra’s Weeklys

Alf thanked Kiera for putting up with such a rabble so graciously.
Gerry avoided any tricky dance steps,
and Alf gave a legal opinion about defamation - Rotary was right all along - Is it the truth?
(but make sure your expensive lawyer can prove it)

Directors
Golf Day Golf Day Golf Day
John has been “resting” up to now - so watch out

Gerry spoke in lieu of Genta who is out looking for his camera “lost at sea”
Desks for DIK for the Solomans. The truck is hired, Komaki will pay costs.
Thursday 20th 7:00AM at Caloundra Primary School, George St - need eight people, one hour to load, five or six to transport. Judy has got hold of a load of football jerseys (no one game to ask how she got them)

Helen - Monoments Men screening, also 20th, $25 by Friday to RC Buderim

Next Monday, presidents meeting with Dai Mason - he will attend on Tuesday

Pauline to arrange a Rotarian to be interviewed by phone by Anna on Valley FM 95.9.  Looks like Pauline has put yours truely in the “hot seat”
Thursday 20th 9:05 am (busy day)

Sergeant Gerry did his worst.

In case you missed Julianna’s shameless product placement ad during the speakers question time, Pharmacy for Life has just moved into the old hardware store at Wurtulla.

Wishing you every success (will send advertising invoice later)

In other news it seems Alf feels that Rotary needs some disaster management

Hello Alf,
It was also a pleasure for me to make contact with you and accept your kind invitation to speak at your Rotary Club Breakfast on March 11th.  In addition to being a Disaster Management Officer with Council, I am also a Rotarian of 17 years, currently President of my own Club, Woombye-Palmwoods, and an incoming ADG for the 2014-2015 Rotary Year.

As discussed, I have a travelling kit that has all the electronic equipment I require.  All that I will need from you is the following:-
·       Screen
·       Table for my laptop and projector
·       Possibly a power board and extension cord, depending on the proximity of power to the table.
·       Second table for some of the handouts which I will have available.  This table does not need to be very big.

From a dietary perspective, I am lactose intolerant, and therefore consume no dairy products.  I am very happy with black tea and coffee.

I look forward to meeting you and your club members on the 11th.  My presentation is a power-point of approximately 15 minutes and I will have collateral material to hand out, so I believe that will fit nicely within your parameters.  If you or your members have any questions, or have specific disaster management related topics which you wish me to address, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Kind Regards
Melanie Ferguson

Presidents Report

Deborah welcomed Kelly, and Pam & Rudy who we haven’t seen for a while

Deb and Ann represented Rotary at Keith Roll’s funeral.  Keith was our President in 77-78.

The BBQ roster is going round - at this point Lyn nicked my pen, presumably to sign up for the roster, so if Deborah dropped any pearls of wisdom at this point, then they are still on the floor.

STEMM to be the major beneficiary of the Golf Day - Deb has been a long serving member of the Friends of STEMM committee.

A good morning at the Salvation Army - Bruce still licking his lips after the “real” eggs.

Speaker
Lauren introduced Kelly,
A Chaplain for nine years, Kelly’s husband is also a Chaplain. She has three children.

Kelly spoke of her “busy” program in this Prep to 12 school of 2,700 students.
Her role is not religious, but she will discuss religion if requested.
She saw a similarity in her work with Booth’s description of the Salvation Army “as a church with it’s sleeves rolled up”
Her next move was a rather clumsy product placement advertisement for Judy’s lasagnas (which was immediately picked up on by our alert members) fortunately, no actual lasagnas were produced during the presentation and we let it go at that.
Kelly’s exploits include a ski trip with two hours notice, camps, sports days, and fund raisers, and has $30k to raise at the Chaplaincy Dinner.

 Programs include;
the 40 hour famine for World Vision
Global Leadership Convention
Breckky Club and lunchtime programs, including my personal favorite “bobbing for broccoli”
Girls groups, Chicks Safari surf camp
SU Camps at Great Keppell
Kids Hope mentoring pro
Valentines Day flowers
Building Bridges (video)
Kelly’s presentation included some of the letters written by students

In thanking Kelly, Alf noted that the service is only State funded for two days per week.

Directors
Gerry wants Kelly to help him with our Golf day
So far we have three teams with 33 to go
There might even be lasagnas as prizes??
nominate more people and get back to Gerry.  Sponsored teams wanted.

Sergeant Gerry, assisted by Corporal Graham wreaked havoc as usual
Stuart still counseling gnome about abandonment issues

Monday, 3 February 2014

In other gripping news, Gnomeo finds a new friend

Jan & Gerry were at our house last night collecting on their Great Xmas Steal "Dinner at Deb's" certificate that they obtained at our Xmas Eve brekky.

They left poor old Gnomeo in our front yard on Saturday Evening all alone and afraid - we did what we could to make him feel at home, we even took him to breakfast at "Sand Bar" where he met our future guest speaker Carol Humphries.  He remained stern faced throughout the meal so we took him to church to receive some counselling from Cpt Stuart Glover.  Stuart said that he would help Gnomeo through his abandonment issues.  This might take some time.

Deb

Fri 31st Jan - Opening of the Shed at the Salvation Army

Speaker

Merv introduced Peter with Tony ridin’ shotgun
Endeavour was started in 1951 by a group of mothers meeting on a Coorparoo verandah - so Queensland don’t you think?

The foundation makes a $300m contribution to the economy each year.
It is currently being restructured with a National Council and Area Committees.

In 1968, the 25 Endeavour Schools became Special Schools.
It is the largest organization of its kind.

State/National Government funding is a headache, but the NCIS will help.

Tony fielded questions -
Stuart asked what NDIS would do?
A = 400,000people eligible to some degree will be personally funded and able to purchase services, so will be a cultural change.
Ron asked who controls interests for the intellectually disadvantaged?
Ultimately it looks like the Public Trustee.
